About MovieRanks

MovieRanks is a movie discovery and ranking platform that helps you find out where any film stands among over a million titles worldwide.

How Rankings Work

Our ranking system uses a composite scoring formula that factors in both the average user rating and the total number of votes a movie has received. Movies with at least 5,000 votes are considered fully qualified and receive a precise position in our charts. Films with fewer votes are estimated based on a Bayesian weighted rating that adjusts for vote confidence.

The top 100 movies are sorted by a composite score that uses the rating as the primary factor and vote count as a tiebreaker, ensuring every movie gets a unique position.

Box Office Verdicts

For movies where financial data is available, we display a box office verdict based on the ratio of worldwide revenue to production budget. Verdicts range from Blockbuster (revenue exceeding twice the budget) to Disaster (recovering less than 70% of costs).

Data Sources

All movie data, posters, cast information, trailers, and similar movie recommendations are sourced from The Movie Database (TMDB). Additional ratings from IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic are provided through the OMDb API. Reviews are contributed by the TMDB community.
